Dick Bruna@Mercis bv, 1997
In February 2012 Mechelen is mounting a retrospective exhibition about the Dutch illustrator and writer Dick Bruna. A large number of original works by this master will go on show in Belgium for the first time.
Dick Bruna is the spiritual father of Nijntje or Miffy, as she is called in English, the world's most popular rabbit. The first picture book appeared in 1955. The books have since been translated into more than 50 languages and Miffy has captured the hearts of children the world over.
The exhibition plunges you into Dick Bruna's world. So you will find:
- the cool, clean graphic design and gentle humour of the Black Bears series,
- the poetical simplicity of the black bear with red eyes on the station posters,
- the charming poster-paint drawings from Bruna's first picture book The Apple,
- the creation of Miffy, from manuscript to book.
