The beguinages are oases of peace and tranquillity and their narrow streets are delightful places for a stroll. Because of its typical Flemish character and unique architecture, the Large Beguinage was declared a UNESCO world heritage site.
Mechelen's first beguinage was founded outside the then city walls in the thirteenth century. Around 1560 the beguinage was destroyed and the beguine community re-established itself in an existing neighbourhood within the city walls. The beguines bought up existing buildings and built new houses, which explains why the Large Beguinage is rather different in character from beguinages in other cities.
These days the Large Beguinage is a tranquil residential area. As listed buildings, the houses are not cheap. Most of the residents are real enthusiasts who take great pride in their environment. Kindly respect their privacy.
On a visit to the Large Beguinage, be sure to see the following streets: Hoviusstraat, Acht-Zalighedenstraat, Conventstraat and Nonnenstraat.
