Mechelen beers

Copyright Layla Aerts

Mechelen means Gouden Carolus. The 'Mechelschen Bruynen', the favourite beer of Charles the Fifth, is a barley beer that has been brewed since 1433. The version that exists nowadays is a little heavier and has more hop than the original beer. 'Gouden Carolus' is Mechelen's pride and joy and thanks its name to the coin that was minted during Charles the Fifth's regency.

The 'Cuvée van de Keizer' is a special beer that is only brewed on 24 February, Charles the fifth's birthday. To celebrate that day, every year Brewery Het Anker organises an Open Brewery Day. It's good to know that the flavour of this improved version of the Gouden Carolus improves the longer you keep it.

In addition, since 2009 Mechelen has its own city beer, the Maneblusser. You certainly have to taste it.
