The Cellebroeders – or Cellites - was one of many religious institutions to settle in the city after the religious troubles in the sixteenth century. On this site the Cellebroeders took care of the sick, mentally ill and plague-stricken, which explains why there are no windows onto the outside world. The Cellebroeders were evicted during the French occupation, and the Franciscan nuns came and carried on their work.

These days the beautifully restored building houses the administrative offices of Mechelen's hospitals. (The entrance is in the Edgard Tinellaan.) Exhibitions and concerts are held here at regular intervals.

De Noker is not open to individual visitors. Groups can visit the building by appointment.
