Hondsbossen

The Hondsbossen-Bemortel is all that remains of the medieval Waverwoud or Waver forest, once a wilderness of trees and marshy undergrowth. In the eleventh century farmers took the forested area in hand, but the wild Hondsbossen-Bemortel near the village of Sint-Katelijne-Waver was spared.

The forested area was common land and the locals would go there to gather firewood and humus and to cut turf, foliage and grass. In times of famine or war the trees and bushes were cut down. It is to this lack of management that Hondsbossen owes its rich biodiversity.

The best way to explore the Hondsbossen is to follow the Red Walk.
